Powell River Regals fall 9-2 to Belarus in Polese Cup

Canada entered their final game of the Polese Cup looking for their first win against the host Belarus National Team coached by former NHL player and coach Curt Fraser. Belarus took the game 9-2, but Canada had it a one goal game entering the third period. After alternating games with backup Scott Peters, goaltender Chad Vizzutti was once again the best player on the ice earning Goaltender of the Tournament honors. With the win Belarus wins the first Polese Cup. Although Canada finished the tournament without a win, these amateurs showed true Canadian heart and soul. Going to the wall each and every shift, blocking more shots than any other team in the tournament by a wide margin and earning the admiration and respect of the Belarusian fans.

First Period - Three minutes in Canada was awarded the first power play of the game but were unable to generate good scoring chances. Soon after Belarus worked with their first man advantage and were able to get plenty of pucks on goaltender Chad Vizzutti, who kept the game scoreless with a fantastic glove save, to a roar from an appreciative crowd. Belarus did finally beat Vizzutti with an even strength goal after a turnover in Canada's zone creating a 2 on 1. With Canada working on their second man advantage less than a minute later they evened the game at 1-1 with their first power play goal of the tournament on a John Coyle tip into the top of the net from a Kip Noble point shot. But Belarus was able to take the lead back 13 seconds later when a Belarusian shot attempt slide off his stick right to an unchecked teammate at the side of the net. Canada soon after had their third PP of the period but were unsuccessful. End of first period Belarus 2 Canada 1. Power plays Belarus 0-2 Canada 1-3.

Second Period - Penalties and power plays were the theme of the middle stanza as Canada had a chance to pull even with a man advantage but it was short lived with a John Coyle interference minor. Belarus then had a 5 on 3 and were able to get their 3rd goal of the game. Canada then found themselves down two men for the second time in the period as dean Shiels was sent off for delay of game for sending the puck over the glass in his own zone. But Canada's best penalty killer Vizzutti kept it a 2 goal game. Near the mid way point of the period Canada had their own 2 man advantage, but they too couldn't capitalize. Soon after Belarus had a breakaway, but yet again Vizzutti was there. After a 3 rd 5 on 3 for Belarus, Canada had their second two man advantage, but couldn't take advantage. Right after Belarus was back to full strength Canada's Mark Kolanos pulled his country to within one on a slap shot that hit the goaltender high and over his shoulder. Assists went to Lyle Tassone and Richard Seeley. End of second period Belarus 3 Canada 2. Power plays Belarus 1-6 Canada 0-5.

Third Period - Belarus restored their two goal lead early in the final frame as a pass to the front of the net hit a player in the leg to beat the goaltender. Belarus captain and ex Pittsburg Penquin Konstantin Koltsov scored their fifth goal, much to the dispute of Vizzutti who had control of the puck but had it batted off him and in. Canada's tank had then run dry and Belarus scored four more times to take the game 9-2 and win the Polese Cup.

Latvia 9 Powell River 2
Summary from Hockey Canada Website
Canada defeated by Latvia 9-2 in Polese Cup

After losing a hard fought game to Russia the night before, Team Canada/ Powell River Regals struggled with the tournament favorites to fall 9-2 to the Latvian national team. Forward John Coyle was named Canadian player of the game. Canada finishes out the Polese Cup with a tilt against Belarus Sunday night.

Canada started out strong creating scoring chances right from the start of the game, getting rewarded with their first goal of the tournament from Jason Deleurme on a nice feed to the side of the net from Jusin Yarocki. Canada then had the first power play of the game but it was short lived and Latvia tied the game four on four. Canada then had a chance to take the lead back with Latvia in the penalty box for too many men, but a turnover allowed Latvia to take their first lead of the game on a shorthanded breakaway.

End of the first period Latvia 2 Canada 1. Power plays Canada 0-2 Latvia 0-3.

Canada came out in the middle frame playing good old Canadian hockey with strong physical play sending three Latvian players to their bench favoring injuries. But another turnover at the offensive blue line sent Latvia in on another 2 on 1 and their third goal of the game. Canada responded with their second goal of the game from Matt Dzieduszycki, assisted by Jason Deleurme and Richard Seeley to cut the Latvian lead in half to 4-2. But Latvia took over scoring three more times, once on the power play. After 40 minutes Latvia 7 Canada 2. Power plays Latvia 1-1 Canada 0-3.

Canada began the period taking a pair of minor penalties allowing Latvia to score their second goal with the man advantage. The teams continued back and fourth play until Latvia finished out the scoring with a minute and a half to make a final score of 9-2. Power plays Latvia 2-7 Canada 0-7

Canada battles hard but falls 2-0 to Russian Super league club in Polese Cup

GOMEL, Belarus - Canada rebounded well after its exhibition loss to Belarus club team Gomel HC but dropped a 2-0 decision to Salavat Yulaev on Friday, a top club in the Russian Super League.
The Canadian player of the game and best player on the ice, goaltender Chad Vizzutti, was outstanding, shutting out the Russians for almost 42 minutes. Russia was shutout in 5-on-5 play, scoring 4-on-4 and on a powerplay. Canada, which is being represented by the Powell River Regals, was unable to capitalize on its numerous chances and power-play opportunities in its first round-robin game of the Polese Cup, also known as the Belarus Cup.

Canada started out well with the first scoring chance on a shot by Matt Dzieduszycki. The teams then traded short powerplays before Canada took five consecutive penalties. In the last five minutes of the period, Mike MacKay missed on a breakaway. The first period ended scoreless.

Canada started the second shorthanded, but continued its strong penalty killing. Russia then took consecutive penalties but, with many quality chances, Canada was unable to capitalize. Canada received a scare at the 18:29 mark as Vizzutti stayed down for several minutes following a goal mouth scramble, but remained in the game. The Russians found themselves on the other end of the penalty calls in the middle frame, receiving four penalties to Canada's three.

A scoreless game saw the third period begin with a lot of emotion and a bad note for Canada as captain Glendon Cominetti was assessed a five-minute major for high sticking and a game misconduct on a marginal call. Twenty-three seconds later, Canada's John Murgatroyd fought Russia's Boykov. Russia scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes in. The penalty-filled period saw the teams exchange power plays.

Russia was later awarded a penalty shot on a partial breakaway. Vizzutti stopped the shot with a blocker save. Russia made it a two-goal game on a 4-on-3 man advantage a few minutes later.
