Bombers on hiatus
By Emmanuel Moutsatsos
Feb 25, 2007, 00:18

Sorry hockey fans, but it looks like you’re all out of luck if you want to see the Thunder Bay Bombers play this season.
“That seems to be what it is,” confirmed Dean Filane, the senior hockey convenor for Hockey Northwestern.
“There were going to run, but it looks they are just going to take the year off and take care of some stuff that’s been going on.”
That means, by default, the Renwick Cup will be in possession of the Kenora Thistles, who are in their first year as a senior organization. They will face off against the Ontario Hockey Federation’s winner in early April in Kenora, with the winner of that representing Ontario at the Allan Cup.
The announcement of the Bombers folding will come as news to members of the team.
“Last I heard is that we were still waiting if there’s a team or not,” said Mike Figliomeni, a forward for the team, who noted the squad had a practice two weeks ago, but hasn’t heard anything since regarding the team.
“I’d be guessing from what I know, that there won’t be a season this year,” he added.
Calls made to Vern Ray, the team’s general manager, were not returned yesterday or Friday.
Fiscal issues might be an issue why the Bombers, who won the Allan Cup back in 2005, might not take to the ice this season said Figliomeni.
“There’s no money,” he said. “You can’t do anything without money. If there’s no money you can’t play.”
Filane could not confirm or deny whether the Bombers owe Hockey Canada any money, and if they do owe money, just how much they owe.
“You snowball where you get low on money and instead of them getting into more trouble or trying to raise more money to keep it going,” said Filane, who cited the team’s trip to Hungary last year as a big expense. “It’s better for them to take the year off and come back with a new slate.”
That’s a shame Filane added since he felt the Bombers had a roster that could’ve added to the Allan Cup they won back in 2005.
“It’s just unfortunate,” Filane noted, “because they still have the players. If they could get to the ice they would be competitive and make another run to the Allan Cup.”
Competing for another Allan Cup, though, won’t happen again until next season.
