Battallion won championship from Winnipeg Monarchs and
successfully
defended cup against Fort William and Regina, in Winnipeg. (This
appears to
be more like the pre 1914-15 format)
In the early
days, the Allan Cup was a challenge cup, just as the Stanley Cup
was, so it
appears there was often more than one championship series in a
year.
After 1914,
the Cup was decided in a more modern-like playoff format with a
series of
games that actually led up to one official Allan Cup final series.

Cup presented by Sir Montague Allan of Montreal
Article Montreal Gazette -Cliffsides clinch Interprovincial title
The first
Allan Cup was simply presented to the Ottawa
Cliffsides
as champion of the league they were in (the Interprovincial
League), much
in the same way the first Stanley Cup was awarded to the
Montreal AAA.
The Cup was presented in Feb 1909 and Ottawa
clinche the Inter-Provincial League title on Mar 6,1909 by beating the Montreal
AAA 9-7. On Mar
15,1909 they
lost the challenge to Queens University
Thus there were two winners of the Cup in 1909 and not 1908
as it had been reported
Ottawa Cliffsides, the year after
winning the first Cup
